I've converted all my planes to 2.4G, and consequently have all these perfectly good FM transmitters and receivers with no planes to talk to.
I have a Hitec Optic 6 with the synthesizer module that can be switched to any of the 50 FM channels, a Hitec Neon, 3 channel only (came with EasyStar RTF) I did add a trainer jack to this,so it can be used as a buddy box off the Optic. Also have a Hitec Flash 5 which has serious range problems, but can be "buddy boxed" with the optic for any 4-5 channel planes. btw the Hitec trainer cable is included in all this. I also have (2) 6 channel and (8) 4 channel receivers most with ch 18 xtal, some spare xtals of various channels, and a Hobbico FM frequncy monitor that shows with a led display which of the 50 channels is operating. The Optic has 8 model memory several mixes and D/R and Expo, It's a great radio, and with the spektrum module can be updated later to 2.4GHz. The optic sold for $169, the receivers are Coronas and I never has any problems with the system. The receivers sold for about $18 to $22 each, the Freq monitor was $45. So, bottom line, if you're starting out, or have stuff on 72Mhz this is a complete 72MHz package. 3 transmitters, 10 receivers, spare xtals Freq monitor and trainer cable all for $150.
Anybody interested? Also includes a plastic foam lined case for 2 transmitters. The manuals for both the Flash 5 and the Optic are also included. The Optic has a Lipo battery and only needs to be charged about every 5-6 weeks, since the LiPo doesn't self-discharge like Nimh or Nicad. The original NiCad iis included as well. I have the original charger but only if you use the NiCad or a NiMh,  the LiPo CANNOT be charged with this charger, or flames might ensue. Any cheapo balance charger will safely charge the LiPo through its balance plug.
